In Metamorphoses, Book II (completed in 2020), George Crumb continues his haunting exploration of visual art transformed into sound. Written for amplified piano, the work draws inspiration from a series of paintings, each movement capturing the atmosphere, symbolism, and emotional undercurrents of its source image. Crumb’s distinctive musical language—ethereal sonorities, extended techniques, and poetic theatricality—creates a vivid, immersive listening experience. Both intimate and otherworldly, Metamorphoses, Book II invites audiences into a dreamlike gallery where sound and image merge in mesmerizing dialogue.
