Amazing 2021 Brunello Offer: Salvioni and Baricci

This is special.

We just got access to two of the most sought-after Brunellos from 2021, a vintage critics are already calling one of the great ones. Salvioni’s ‘La Cerbaiola’ is a tiny-production cult wine from just 4 hectares, and one of my two favorite Brunellos, hands down. Baricci’s ‘Montosoli’ comes from the most famous hill in Montalcino and earned 100 points from Kerin O’Keefe.

Both wines are in stock now, and orders are filled first come, first served. These are extremely limited: just eight six-packs, both wines combined, were allocated to the entire state. Thanks to my relationship with these producers and our support of Brunello at Pane e Vino, I may be able to get additional cases.

Two ways to order: use the order form and pay by Venmo (@uncorkedpianist) or check (payable to Pane e Vino) at $250 and $140, which I prefer; or buy now by card below at $258 and $145, which includes the 3% card fee. Either way, you can order up to 12 bottles of each. If you’d like more, email sommelier@panevinoks.com and I’ll let you know what’s available. If I can’t fill your full order, I’ll refund the difference. Pick up your wine at Pane e Vino starting tonight, Friday, October 30, or during regular business hours or by appointment after November 2.

THE WINES

Baricci, Brunello di Montalcino 'Montosoli' 2021
$145.00

From Montosoli, the hill just north of town that many consider Montalcino’s greatest cru. Nello Baricci was one of the founding members of the Brunello Consorzio, and today his grandsons run the estate in pure old-school style: one vineyard, large Slavonian oak casks. Bright red cherry, rose, orange peel, and crushed stone, with fine tannins and a lovely lift on the finish. 100 points from Kerin O’Keefe, 95 from Wine Advocate and Vinous. Best drunk 2027-2040.

Salvioni, Brunello di Montalcino ‘La Cerbaiola’ 2021: $250/btl by Venmo/check · $258/btl by card (reg. $285/btl)

Along with Soldera, Salvioni is my absolute favorite Brunello and one of my five favorite wines of all time. Over several visits, I’ve tasted straight from the big Slavonian oak casks with Alessia Salvioni in the family’s cellar, tucked into the basement of their apartment in Montalcino. My own cellar holds bottles going back to 1991. The family farms just a few hectares at La Cerbaiola, high on the slopes just outside town, and makes a tiny amount of Brunello each year. It is intense, perfumed, and built to age: dark cherry, wild herbs, violets, and iron, wrapped in firm, polished tannins, with the energy that makes 2021 so exciting. 97 points from both Vinous and Wine Advocate. Best drunk 2029-2045.

Baricci, Brunello di Montalcino ‘Montosoli’ 2021: $140/btl by Venmo/check · $145/btl by card (reg. $160/btl)

Nello Baricci was one of the founding members of the Brunello Consorzio and among the first to plant vines on Montosoli, the hill just north of town that many consider Montalcino’s greatest cru. Today his grandsons Federico and Francesco Buffi run the estate, and the style is pure old school: one vineyard, large Slavonian oak casks, nothing flashy. Bright red cherry, rose, orange peel, and crushed stone, with fine tannins and a lovely lift on the finish. 100 points from Kerin O’Keefe, 95 from Wine Advocate and Vinous. Best drunk 2027-2040.

The 2021 Vintage

2021 began with a hard April frost that cut yields, followed by a warm, dry summer and cool nights through harvest. The result is a small crop of concentrated, structured wines with real freshness. Eric Guido of Vinous calls them “structured, youthfully tense wines” with the balance to mature over the next 15 to 20 years, though he notes they already give plenty of pleasure today. Salvioni and Baricci are two of the most traditional producers in Montalcino, and both made outstanding wines in 2021.
